Colour limit 8 A ceiling, not a target. The tool finds the real inks in the artwork and reports how many it actually used, which is often fewer. Each one becomes its own layer, and one layer is one screen on a press, so fewer colours print cheaper. Most logos are 2 to 6. Detail Balanced Smooth gives fewer, cleaner curves and a smaller file. Sharp follows the original edge more literally, which helps hard-edged logos and hurts noisy scans. Ignore specks 8 px Drops shapes smaller than this so JPEG noise and stray dots do not become real paths. Raise it on a photographed or scanned logo, lower it if fine detail is disappearing.

What this does and does not do. Tracing rebuilds flat colour areas as vector shapes. It works on logos, line art, badges and simple marks. It cannot rescue a photograph, it turns gradients and soft shadows into hard bands of colour, and text comes back as outlined shapes rather than editable type. Colour values are the traced RGB, not a Pantone match, so always confirm against a physical ink or thread chart before you print. On a logo you did not create, check you have the right to reproduce it.

What kind of file is it? Vector = .ai, .eps, or .pdf built from shapes; scales to any size. PNG/JPG = pixels; can look great small but break when enlarged. A screenshot or a logo pulled off a website is almost never usable for print. Resolution Print needs ~300 dpi at the final printed size. A big screen image can still be low-res once blown up on a banner. Vector files are resolution-independent, so this doesn't apply to them. Colour mode Screens use RGB, presses use CMYK. If a file stays in RGB, bright blues and greens can shift on print. Converting to CMYK (or providing Pantone/PMS values) keeps the colour true. Background A transparent background lets the logo sit on any garment or product colour. A baked-in white background prints as a visible white box on anything that isn't white. Text in the logo If the file still has live (editable) fonts, another computer without that exact font will substitute or reflow it. Converting text to outlines/curves locks the look permanently.

What "print-ready" really means

Vector beats everything. A .ai/.eps/.pdf scales from a pen to a banner with no quality loss. Always ask for it first.

Transparent, not white. A transparent background is the difference between a clean logo and a white rectangle on a navy hoodie.

CMYK or Pantone. Nail the colour before production, not after. Screen colours lie.
